Implant dentistry is the branch of dentistry that replaces missing teeth by means of implants on which the new artificial teeth are fixed. When implants are inserted into the bone, the bone grows in direct contact with the implant surface. This condition, called “osseointegration”, allows implants to become an integral part of the body – just like the roots of natural teeth. Implant dentistry has come out of the “pioneering stage” and became an official branch of dentistry in the United States in the early 1980s and subsequently in Italy in 1985-86. The “officialization” only occurred when the prestigious Swedish School run by Prof. P. I. Branemark presented to the international scientific world the clinical research on patients that demonstrated in an incontestable way that implants are a treatment with a very high success rate, over 95% after 10 years. Our clinical experience dating back to 1986 confirms these data. Implantology is currently taught in the most prestigious foreign and Italian universities. In the last few years, professional academies in Europe and America were established for organizing congresses and courses for teaching “modern implantology” on a national and international level. Italy has made great progress in the last 15 years, bringing itself into line with the “most evolved” countries in the medical-surgery field, and is now an important voice in international congresses.
