Endodontic surgery is the operation of choice when there is no chance of treating a tooth affected by apical lesion, also called granuloma, by means of a normal root canal treatment through the tooth crown. A granuloma is a small area of inflammatory tissue that surrounds the tooth apex. It usually forms when the dental pulp, commonly called the “nerve”, becomes necrotic, that is, it dies due to deep decay or traumas. These apical lesions can also result from incomplete root canal treatments where the dentist was unable to treat the root in a proper way due to anatomical limitations. If the surgery is carried out correctly, the success rate is high.
